Your Questions Answered

Whatever your skin type, there is a Votary oil perfect for you.

We are passionate about the skin-transforming power of natural plant oils. They suit all skin types. When used to cleanse, they leave skin feeling beautifully clean not tight or taut. When used to moisturise, they help dry, fragile skin to hydrate, heal and plump-up. They restore balance to combination skin, and reduce oiliness in oily skin (yes really!). They are calming and soothing, and easily absorbed. They reduce the appearance and recovery time of blemishes. They work wonders on ageing skin, hormonal skin, sensitive skin and teenage skin.

We have gathered our most frequently asked questions below to help guide you. If your question isn’t answered here, please email us skincare@votary.co.uk. We love to talk skin!

How should I use my Votary products?

The blog section on our website  – see The Votarist – contains product usage information, demos and masterclasses, as well as advice on which cleanser or facial oil is best suited to your skin or life stage. There’s also information about star ingredients in our range, and on the benefits of oil cleansing.

Can you send me some samples to try?

We send out two samples of your choice with your order when you buy from our website, but we do not send out samples in advance. However, if you buy a product and it does not suit your skin, you can return it to us for a full refund. Please go to the bottom of this page to be directed to our terms and conditions.

Are Votary products suitable for vegans?

Yes. We are very proud of our vegan status and none of our products contain any animal derived ingredients.

Are Votary products cruelty free?

Yes. Votary products are never tested on animals.

Are Votary products organic?

Votary products are made from a combination of organic and non organic oils, with our priority being the quality of each ingredient. Some of our chosen oils are not available organically, or are of inconsistent quality when organic. We hand-pick the best quality oils for the best possible result which is why we prefer to combine the two.

Do Votary products contain parabens, mineral oils, or PEGs?

Votary products proudly contain NONE of the above. The beautiful thing about pure plant oils is that they don’t require preservatives, so when you buy one of our oil products they are preservative free.  Our chic green glass bottles also work to keep them in perfect condition.

Do Votary products contain alcohol?

Votary Lemon and Neroli Toning Serum contains a small amount of alcohol in the form of benzyl (less than 5%). Benzyl, unlike denat, is a fatty alcohol. Fatty alcohols are derived from natural fats and oils and are non-irritating for skin.

Are any Votary products fragrance free?

Super Seed Facial Oil and Super Seed Nutrient Cream are fragrance free and are designed to be used on even the most sensitive and delicate skin.

Do Votary products contain retinol?

Votary Intense Night Oil and Intense Eye Oil contain a particularly gentle, oil soluble form of ester retinoid called Hydroxypincacolone Retinoate at 1%, which is brilliant for nightly use.

If you are using the Intense Night Oil or Intense Eye Oil, we advise using them only at night, and we advise against using any other products which contain retinol. We also suggest you use a daily SPF as skin can become more sensitised to sunlight with retinol use.

Should I wear an SPF daily if I am using Votary products?

We recommend using a daily SPF whatever skincare you are using. Our facial cleansing oils are brilliant at removing every trace of it, so you can protect your skin from UVA and UVB during the daytime without congesting your skin or making it dull over time.

Can Votary facial oils be used during pregnancy?

All Votary facial oils contain less than 2% essential oils, and we do not know of any reason why any of our products would pose an issue during pregnancy. Many women continue to use their Votary products throughout their pregnancies, and tell us that they have kept their skin blooming through this hormonally turbulent time.

However, some women prefer to avoid essential oils and fragrance altogether during pregnancy, and in this case we recommend using our Super Seed Facial Oil and Super Seed Nutrient Cream to feed and nourish your skin.

Can I use Votary if I have eczema, rosacea or psoriasis?

We have many customers who have found Votary to be transformational if they have these issues.

But of course all skins are different and we suggest patch testing on a small area of your neck over several days to see how your skin reacts. Our Super Seed Facial Oil and Super Seed Nutrient Cream are fragrance free and are the best place to start.

If you buy a Votary product and it does not suit your skin, you can return it to us within 14 days for a full refund. (*We do not refund the cost of postage.)

Can I use Votary if I am using Roaccutane?

Roaccutane can make skin dry and sensitive. Any fragranced products – even naturally fragranced ones – are best avoided. Our Super Seed Facial Oil and Super Seed Nutrient Cream are fragrance free and so can be used by Roaccutane users but we suggest careful patch testing on an area of your neck for a few days first.

Do Votary products contain nuts?

Yes. Votary Body Treatment Oil contains macadamia nut oil. Votary Neroli and Myrrh Facial Oil contains hazelnut oil. Votary Super Seed Nutrient Cream contains coconut oil which is classified as a nut, a fruit and a seed. All of our range is made and bottled in the same processing plant. For a detailed breakdown of what each product contains, please consult the ingredients section on each page of our website.

Do Votary products contain sesame seeds?

No. No Votary products contain sesame seeds, but our oils are bottled in a processing plant which also handles sesame.  For a detailed breakdown of what each product contains, please consult the ingredients section on each page of our website.

Are Votary products gluten free?

ALL Votary products – including Votary Super Seed Nutritional Supplement – are gluten free and suitable for coeliacs.

My Votary products are not always the same colour. Is this a problem?

Not at all. All of the ingredients in our products are naturally sourced and made in small batches. This means that there can sometimes be slight differences in colour and fragrance which is in keeping with their natural origins.

Is Votary packaging recyclable?

All of our packaging is recyclable. Our box manufacturers are FSC & PEFC certified, and support The World Land Trust to offset any emissions produced during manufacture. We only use recyclable glass bottles which also preserve our luxurious oils from over-exposure to sunlight and heat.
We don’t use any plastic-based packaging to protect our products for shipping.

When should a Votary product be used by?

This symbol  tells you the recommended number of months within which the product should be used after opening, provided the product has been stored under normal conditions and not exposed to extreme temperatures. For example (6M) means you should replace this product 6 months after first opening.

How should I wash my Votary face cloth?

For optimum results wash at 60% with the detergent of your choice.
