Votary Ethics

Are your products suitable for vegans?

We are very proud of our vegan status and none of our products contain any animal derived ingredients.

Are your products cruelty-free?

We do not test any of our ingredients, formulas or finished products on animals. We ensure our products are cruelty-free every step of the way.

Do Votary (or any company that works for you) test your ingredients or finished products on animals at any stage during manufacture?

Every company that works for us has a cruelty free policy.

Is Votary owned by a company that tests on animals?

No. Votary is owned by by our two co-founders Arabella Preston and Charlotte Semler who are committed to never testing on animals.

Is Votary sold in China? If not, do you plan to do so in the future?

No, we are not currently sold in China, nor in any other country where selling there requires animal testing. We would never compromise our cruelty free and vegan values. If  the regulations for imported products changes, and animal testing is no longer a requirement, we would adapt accordingly.

Is Votary packaging recyclable?

All of our outer paper and card packaging is recyclable.

Our box manufacturers are FSC & PEFC certified, and they support the World Land Trust to offset any emissions produced during manufacture.

We use recyclable glass bottles which also work to preserve our luxurious oils from over-exposure to sunlight and heat.

Our products are packed with Eco Flo loose foam chips which are made from 100% genetically modified-free starch. They are 100% biodegradable, fully compostable, low energy and they dissolve in water. They are manufactured from annually renewable sources.

Our gift boxes are packed with recyclable shredded paper.

Votary Formulas

Are your products organic?

Votary products are made from a combination of organic and non organic oils, with our priority being the quality of each ingredient. Some of our chosen oils are not available organically, or are of inconsistent quality when organic. We hand-pick the best quality oils for the best possible result which is why we prefer to combine the two. All of our oils – with the exception of three (rice bran oil, camellia leaf oil and calendula oil) – are cold-pressed to preserve their natural goodness.

Can Votary products be used during pregnancy?

Intense Night Oil and Intense Eye Oil contain retinoid which should not be used during pregnancy.

All Votary skincare contains less than 2% essential oils, other than the Hydrating Body Oil, Body Treatment Oil, Antidote Night Oil and Feelings aromatherapy vials which all contain 3% essential oils.

We know of no reason why any of our products (apart from the Intense Night and Eye Oil featured above) would pose an issue during pregnancy. Many women continue to use Votary throughout their pregnancies, and tell us that it has kept their skin healthy, happy and radiant throughout this hormonally complex time.

However, some women prefer to avoid essential oils and fragrance altogether during pregnancy.  If you wish to avoid essential oils, our Super Seed Facial Oil, Super Seed Nutrient Cream, and  Lemon and Neroli Toning Serum do not contain any.  If you want to use products that are both essential oil AND fragrance-free, we  recommend our Super Seed Facial Oil and Super Seed Nutrient Cream to feed and nourish your skin.

Do Votary products contain parabens, mineral oils, or PEGs?

Votary natural plant based products proudly contain none of the above.

The beautiful thing about pure plant oils is that they don’t require preservatives, so all of our oil products are preservative free. Our chic green glass bottles also work to keep them in perfect condition.

Does Votary skincare contain alcohol?

Votary Lemon and Neroli Toning Serum contains a small amount of alcohol (less than 5%) in the form of benzyl. Benzyl, unlike denat, is a fatty alcohol. Fatty alcohols are derived from natural fats and oils and are non-irritating for the skin.

Are any Votary products fragrance-free?

Super Seed Facial Oil, Super Boost Night Drops, Super Seed Nutrient Cream are all fragrance-free and are designed to be used on even the most sensitive and delicate skin.

Does Votary skincare contain retinol?

Votary Intense Night Oil and Intense Eye Oil contain a particularly gentle, oil soluble form of ester retinoid called Hydroxypincacolone Retinoate at 0.1%.

If you are using the Intense Night Oil or Intense Eye Oil, we advise using them only at night, and we advise against using any other products which contain retinol. We also suggest you use a daily SPF as skin can become more sensitised to sunlight with retinol use.

Products containing retinoid should not be used during pregancy.

Should I wear an SPF daily if I am using Votary?

We recommend using a daily SPF whatever skincare you are using. Our facial cleansing oils are brilliant at removing every trace of it, so you can protect your skin from UVA and UVB during the daytime without congesting your skin or making it dull over time.

Do Votary products contain palm oil?

None of our 100% pure plant oil formulas contain any palm oil. However, palm oil derivatives are present within one or two ingredients we use in Super Seed Nutrient Cream and Super Seed Serum. Every ingredient we use is RSPO certified. We continue to work with all our suppliers to source only the most environmentally responsible ingredients in keeping with our vegan and cruelty free status.

Can I use Votary if I have eczema, rosacea or psoriasis?

We have many customers who have found Votary to be transformational if they have these issues. However,  all skins are different and we suggest patch testing on a small area of your neck over several days to see how your skin reacts. Our Super Seed Facial Oil and Super Seed Nutrient Cream are fragrance-free and are the best place to start. If you buy a Votary product and it does not suit your skin, you can return it to us within 14 days for a full refund. (*We do not refund the cost of postage.)

Can I use Votary if I am using Roaccutane?

Roaccutane can make skin dry and sensitive. Any fragranced products – even naturally fragranced ones – are best avoided. Our Super Seed Facial Oil and Super Seed Nutrient Cream are fragrance-free and so can be used by Roaccutane users but we suggest careful patch testing on an area of your neck for a few days first.
