Dry or dehydrated skin?
Deciding whether your skin is dry or dehydrated can be confusing, especially as dry and dehydrated skin look and feel the same. The reality is simpler.
Dehydrated skin lacks water. Solutions can include drinking more water, using products which contain hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, and using facial oils or creams as a final layer to really lock-in moisture and hydration. Dry skin is generally more of a structural problem. Dry skin lacks lipids (oils) which are crucial to strong, healthy skin. Your skin is meant to contain lipids. Lipids are like the soft mortar which holds the skin’s surface together. They add fullness, plumpness and resilience. Lipids help to build the barrier of the skin’s mantle. If the epidermal wall is strong, it’s also better at retaining water. That’s why all dry skin ultimately becomes dehydrated too, which is why you really don’t need to obsess about in which category your skin belongs. The answer is almost always more lipids.
The crucial and transforming thing is to boost your lipid (oil) levels. Whether your skin has become drier as you age, or because of hormonal changes like menopause or pregnancy, or whether it’s the result of extreme weather or central heating, the solution is more lipids. They are the basis of of our entire Super Seed range which is lipid-rich to feed and nourish dry and dehydrated skin.
